Oracle Database 10.2, 11.x, 12.x, and 18c are available as a media or FTP request for those customers who own a valid Oracle Database product license for any edition. To request access to these releases, follow the instructions in Oracle Support Document 1071023.1 (Requesting Physical Shipment or Download URL for Software Media) from My Oracle Support. NOTE: for Oracle Database 10.2, you should request 10.2.0.1 even if you want to install a later patch set. Once you install 10.2.0.1 you can then apply any 10.2 patch set. Would it be possible to create a step by step guide on installing oracle directly on ubuntu (since running on vm is a bit slow if your machine is a bit obsolete)? There are a few articles on the internet but I failed each time I tried implementing the process.
Now, if I open Terminal on my host machine, I can SSH into my VM via: ssh -p 2222 oracle@localhost. I get the Terminal in the VM, and it gives me the same welcome message I get when I first boot up the VM in VirtualBox. Also, I can ping localhost or 127.0.0.1 and it responds with a variable but short lag.

I downloaded the JDBC for Oracle Database 12c, JDK 7, from Oracle, here. I stuck the .jar file in my Documents folder (in case that's wrong). I suppose that the default configuration of the guest OS's firewall did allow for SSH on port 2222, as that worked fine even with the firewall in place, which served to mislead me into thinking that there was something wrong with my database driver or connection.
The one that I was using, ending in :orcl instead of /PDB1, connects to the "container database". I don't fully understand Oracle 12c and the "pluggable database" implementation, but the rough idea is that you can have multiple databases within a single one, and you can turn them on and off by plugging/unplugging them. Hence, "PDB1", Pluggable Database 1.

I see that Oracle 11g or 12c doesn't have the download files for OS X. However, there is a version of the SQL Developer available for OS X. What's the point of the SQL Developer when you don't have a database?
You can't install the database server software directly on OS X1. Oracle made a decision some time ago not so support it any more, presumably because it wasn't used enough to justify the costs involved. I seem to recall its demise roughly coincided with Apple dropping their Xserve line, but I may have imagined that.
You can use SQL Developer on a Mac to connect to a database running on Windows or Unix/Linux etc., so it still has a place; the fact you can't have a local server running on the same hardware isn't really relevant for most people. It just allows developers to use a Mac instead of forcing them on to a Windows or Linux PC.
You can also install Windows or Linux on Bootcamp or in your own VM in Virtualbox, Parallels or VMWare; and then install Oracle natively. Using a pre-built image saves you needing to learn how to install the database server software, and also makes it easier to go back - if you really mess something up you can trash it and start again fairly simply.

I have yet to find a consistent resource online of how to natively install the database and I have also tried my hands on binaries compilation and package transfers along all the previous versions with various, inconsistent results. I have to admit that this long-winded process gets too complicated for my taste and patience.
